How to Refer to the Occupier

Steven Salaita, Writers Against the War on Gaza

HOW TO REFER TO THE OCCUPIER: “When it comes to Palestine, language itself doesn’t create perceptions of incivility; a built-in perception of incivility underlies disgust for the language,” writes Steven Salaita in his recent essay, “Down with the Zionist Entity; Long Live ‘the Zionist Entity,’” a compendious case for referring to “Israel” with delegitimizing language. “All of our speech acts are objectionable if their demand is freedom. Our putative saviors who keep instructing us to be nicer don’t oppose bad optics; they oppose Palestinian liberation.”
