Submissions

Submission Guidelines

We welcome submissions in a variety of formats, genres, and mediums. JCSZ has published interdisciplinary research papers, interviews, organizing notes, political education documents, syllabi, and other pedagogical interventions. We invite submissions in these formats and others that expand our scope, such as works-in-translation, creative writing, forums and round-tables, photo and video essays, art, interactive media, and other projects.

For articles, essays, and other written work:

We seek submissions that advance the field of Critical Zionism Studies, support the movement for Palestinian liberation, and advance the anti-Zionist struggle. As such, we look for manuscripts that demonstrate clear argumentation, thoughtful engagement with relevant scholarship, and innovative contribution to Critical Zionism Studies.

  • Target length for manuscripts:
    • Articles: 6,000-8,000 words.
    • Essays: 3,000–6,000 words.
    • Works-in-translation: Translation, in full or excerpted, should be accompanied by a framing introduction (1,500–3,000 words) by the translator, explaining the provenance and relevance of the original manuscript.
    • Manuscripts of any format and genre should not exceed 10,000 words (including endnotes and abstract).
  • All manuscripts should be double-spaced, with one-inch margins, in 12-point font.
  • Text and endnotes are to conform to the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style using endnotes
  • If your manuscript includes images or other media, send them as separate files or URLs (see media submission instructions below). Indicate in the manuscript where media elements are intended to be placed but do not embed images or other media into word documents.
  • Please submit manuscripts and all additional documents in Microsoft Word as email attachments to journal@criticalzionismstudies.org.

For book reviews:

The Journal for the Critical Study of Zionism is excited to publish critical reviews of recently published books on Palestine, Zionism, and related subjects as part of the ongoing discourse related to Critical Zionism Studies. We are particularly interested in publishing a thoughtful analysis of the book’s argument and contribution(s) to contemporary debates that can discuss and critique the way(s) in which a particular book or set of books treats Zionism as a system of power, difference production, exploitation, and oppression which shapes lives and has been resisted, subverted, and defied. We also expect that book reviews will align with the ICSZ Points of Unity regarding the interrogation of Zionism and its multiple, interlocking, and historical systems of domination and elimination, including but not limited to (settler) colonialism, empire, white supremacy, racial capitalism, misogyny, (dis)ability, and cisheteropatriarchy (as applicable). We will prioritize reviews that address these substantive concerns as rooted in the journal’s mission. Books can be published in any language. If you would like to submit a review in a language other than English, please let us know. If you would like to offer a critical intervention for a book published in the past or review a set of books with a new critical take, we would also consider that.

Book reviews should not exceed 1000 words and include limited external references.

If you are interested in publishing a book review in the Journal for the Critical Study of Zionism, please email journal@criticalzionismstudies.org with the book title, author, year of publication and a 250-word abstract summarizing the content and thesis of your review. We reserve the right to reject submissions and to commission book reviews from scholars, artists, and activists.
