The Journal for the Critical Study of Zionism (JCSZ) is the journal of the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism. The journal seeks to advance theories, policies, practices, and pedagogies that interrogate Zionism and its multiple, interlocking, and historical systems of domination and elimination, including but not limited to (settler) colonialism, empire, white supremacy, racial capitalism, misogyny, (dis)ability, and cisheteropatriarchy. JCSZ is a multidisciplinary, transnational journal committed to anti-Zionism and the abolition of all forms of oppression. It aims to advance Critical Zionism Studies as a domain of knowledge production and a field of praxis, both within and beyond the academy.
JCSZ provides a much-needed publication venue for scholars, artists, intellectuals, activists, and cultural workers who engage in the critical study of Zionism and struggle against censorship of their work. We seek contributions that investigate and challenge how Zionism, as a system of power, difference production, exploitation, and oppression shapes lives and how it is resisted, subverted, and defied. We welcome work that is radically interdisciplinary, empirically and theoretically grounded, historiographically attuned, and reflects a critical analysis of how knowledge is produced within and outside academia. We also welcome submissions that engage a variety of methods, epistemologies, and modalities, such as photo essays, interviews, zines, round-tables, and other projects, including art and/or media, together with those that employ movement- and community-engaged approaches.
Peer Review Policy
Each article submitted to JCSZ will receive a preliminary review by the Editorial Collective (EC). The EC will then decide whether to send the submission out for additional external review by an Advisory Board (AB) member or another outside reader. Alternatively, the EC may decide to review the work internally. Both are routes to possible publication. Final decisions regarding the publication of any submission are made collectively by the EC.
Submissions reviewed by the EC are attached to the author’s name throughout the process, while submissions reviewed by the advisory board or external readers remain anonymous during the review process. After review, submissions are accepted, rejected, or provisionally accepted pending revisions. When revisions have been made, revised articles are reviewed by the EC. This review process also applies to conference panels, symposia, and special issues.
In the case of junior scholars, cultural workers, activists, and other precarious workers, the EC commits to working with authors (if authors wish) to align their submissions with the requirements for publication. This may mean a protracted revision process working closely with the EC as a whole, or with one or two members of the EC.
