What’s a zine?
An overview from “Zines & Activism”, Center for Public Education Zine Library: The origins of zines aren’t simply counterculture to consumer focused magazines, but also share roots with pamphlets, grassroots activism and communication in the underground. Zinesters create handwritten and hand drawn pamphlets and then photocopy the pamphlets for wider distribution. This method provides zinester activists with an inexpensive medium to produce protest literature, informational campaigns, and to educate their readers. Although the zines have limited distribution and may not have an impact at the macro political levels, they do provide alternative access to information within small communities and can be impactful at the micro political levels.
