JCSZ blog: Thawra ثورة

Introduction

In order to supplement the core academic work of the Journal for the Critical Study of Zionism (JCSZ), the Editorial Collective is launching an affiliated blog Thawra ثورة . Thawra will serve as a dynamic, flexible platform that allows for the publication of timely, relevant, and engaging pieces that build upon and expand the journal’s mission. Thawra will complement JCSZ’s in-depth, rigorous academic contributions by offering more frequent, rapid responses to emerging issues, while still adhering to the journal’s core values and editorial standards

Submission Process

Presently, Thawra does not have an open call for submissions. Although there is no open call, the Editorial Collective is happy to receive developed and detailed proposals and, if appropriate, will invite you to contribute. If you have an idea for a piece that aligns with the blog’s aims and scope, we invite you to send us a brief proposal (no more than 300 words) outlining your topic, approach, and timeline to completion. Send your proposals to journal@criticalzionismstudies.org with “Thawra proposal” in the subject line.

Scope

The blog will serve as an avenue for showcasing a diverse range of work, from academic essays to creative, multimedia projects, offering a less formal than JCSZ but equally impactful contribution to the field of Critical Zionism Studies. The blog will be distinct in its format and approach compared to the journal. Thawra will include, but not be limited to:

  • short-form academic essays (800-1500 words) that respond to current events, trends, or emerging ideas relevant to the critical study of Zionism,
  • interviews with scholars, activists, artists, and cultural workers,
  • multimedia projects,
  • zines and comics,
  • book and media reviews,
  • opinion pieces, which offer critique, commentary, and radical alternatives to prevailing political and social discourses surrounding Zionism,
  • works in translation (which should include an explanation by the translator contextualizing the original piece and the stakes of the translation).

Editorial Standards

While Thawra aims to publish timely contributions in a variety of forms and mediums, it still maintains the JCSZ editorial standards. All submissions will undergo a review process by the Editorial Collective to ensure that they align with the mission of the JCSZ and make a meaningful contribution to the field of Critical Zionism Studies. Additionally, a designated blog editor will work closely with the authors guiding them through the publication process.
