Though Beinart’s article “The Shame of the American Jewish Establishment” lays out some of the Anti-Defamation League and American Jewish Committee’s recent embrace of the MAGA movement, it sanitizes the groups’ racist, anti-left history and erases the last decade of research and organizing on this topic. To write this, Beinart had to ignore significant scholarly work on the “Jewish defense” industry, including our recent books, essential histories like Michael Staub’s Torn At the Roots, and insights in the very texts that he does cite. He also swept aside Palestinian, BIPOC, and queer organizers’ resistance to the ADL in the past half-decade—resistance that has been essential to clarifying that the ADL has long been a right-wing institution.
